What is an OEM battery?
An OEM battery is a battery produced to the buyer’s specification and sold under the buyer’s brand — rather than the factory’s own label.
The core idea
OEM stands for original equipment manufacturer. In battery sourcing, OEM means the supplier manufactures to an agreed specification: voltage, capacity, CCA, standard family, case size, terminal layout and labelling. The buyer controls the product definition and brand.
How OEM differs from ODM and private label
- OEM — you bring the specification; the manufacturer builds to it.
- ODM — the manufacturer offers an existing design you can brand and adjust.
- Private label — your identity is applied to a supplied product platform.

What goes into an OEM battery specification
At minimum, an OEM battery project defines the standard family (JIS, DIN, BCI, AS or SA), voltage, capacity (Ah), CCA, dimensions, terminal type and polarity. Reference models such as 65D26 or H6 are often used as a starting point.

Why lead-acid OEM is different from lithium
Lead-acid is a 150-year-old supply chain. Unlike lithium cells, lead-acid starting batteries are not Class 9 dangerous goods, so shipping and compliance are simpler. For importers, this means fewer transport restrictions and lower documentation burden.
